A Christmas party for striking miners and their families, was held on the second floor of the Italian Hall in Calmut, Michigan, on December 24, 1913. More than four hundred people were in the room when an unknown person falsely shouted 'Fire' and panic led to a mass of people trying to exit down a steep stairway. A crush resulted in the deaths of 14 adults and 59 children, including 7 year old Edwin Heikkinen and 5 year old Rosie Jesic.
