Valletta Stampede of 1823 - February 11, 1823: On this day in history, February 11, 1823, significant events took place today in Valletta, Malta, respecting the Valletta Stampede of 1823. Following a tradition at the Minori Osservanti convent in Valleta, bread was being handed out to poor children during the carnival on February 11, 1823. It was a time of famine and the queue of children was swelled by other adults and children wanting to get free bread. The queue went along a corridor with stairs towards an exit door. When a lamp went out, there was some pushing and children fell down the stairs and blocked the exit. the pushing continued and many children got caught in the resulting crush.
