On February 24, 1944, 2,750 men, who would later be known as 'Merrill's Marauders' entered the Burmese Jungle. 49th Street Elementary School Shooting - February 24, 1984: On this day in history, February 24, 1984, important events took place today in California, USA, in respect of the 49th Street Elementary School Shooting. On February 24, 1984, unemployed Tyrone Mitchell began firing at children in the playground of the 49th Street Elementary School in Los Angeles. Mitchell, armed with two shotguns and an AR-15 rifle, was shooting from a window in his house which overlooked the playground. One child and a passerby were killed, and a further 14 people were injured. Mitchell killed himself with a shotgun. United Airlines Flight 811 Incident - February 24, 1989: On this day in history, February 24, 1989, momentous events took place today in Hawaii, USA, with regard to the United Airlines Flight 811 Incident. Shorthly after taking off from Honolulu International Airport on February 24, 1989, United Airlines Flight 811, helmed by Captain David Cronin, suffered a cargo door failure. The door opened and was ripped away from the plane causing a split in a section of the fuselage. 9 passengers were killed when they were ejected from the plane, the remaining passengers and crew survived after Cronin returned the aircraft to Honolulu and landed it safely. The planes belonged to the activist group 'Brothers to the Rescue', which was formed by Cuban exiles. They had previously dropped political leaflets from aircraft to Cuba. A Metrolink passenger train collided with a truck that had accidentally turned onto the rails at an intersection and become stuck. The emergency brakes had been activated but the train hit the truck and derailed at Oxnard, California.
