Ritual Suicide of 46 of the 47 Ronin - February 4, 1703: On this day in history, February 4, 1703, important events took place today in Edo (now Tokyo), Japan, surrounding the Ritual Suicide of 46 of the 47 Ronin. Asano Naganori, a Samurai Leader committed ritual suicide (seppuku) after assaulting Kira Yoshinaka, a court official. The 47 Ronin murdered Kira, to avenge their master's honor, then 46 handed themselves. One had been sent to Ako to report the completion of the revenge. The 46 Ronin were sentenced to death, however the Shogun ordered them to commit seppuku. When the other Ronin returned, he was pardoned.
