Marias Massacre - January 23, 1870: On this day in history, January 23, 1870, significant events took place today in Montana, USA, respecting the Marias Massacre. Following the murder of a white trader by a Piegan warrior, Owl Child, Major Eugene M. Baker led a squadron of cavalry to track him down. They came across a camp on the Marias River and prepared to attack, when a scout informed Baker that it was a friendly camp. Baker, reportedly drunk at the time, ordered his arrest and continued the attack. Around 150 to 200 old men, women and children, many weak with smallpox, were killed.
