Battle of May Island - January 31, 1918: On this day in history, January 31, 1918, crucial events took place today in Firth of Forth, Scotland, relating to the Battle of May Island. On January 31, 1918, a series of accidents involving Royal Navy ships occurred on the Firth of Forth. Approximately 40 vessels set off, in mist, for Scapa Flow to take part in exercises. The line was led by cruisers Ithuriel, commanded by Captain Leir, and Courageous. The first collision happened when submarine K14's helm jammed and she was hit by K22. Several more accidents occurred in the subsequent confusion resulting in damage to three submarines and a light cruiser. A further two submarines were lost in the accident that became known as the Battle of May Island. Execution of Deserter Eddie Slovik - January 31, 1945: On this day in history, January 31, 1945, significant events took place today in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, France, respecting the Execution of Deserter Eddie Slovik. During World War II, Eddie Slovik was court martialled and found guilty of desertion to avoid hazardous duty, after his admittance that he would run away if sent to fight again. He expected to be dishonorably discharged but was sentenced to death. Despite pleas for clemency, Slovik was executed by firing squad, becoming the only American soldier to be executed for desertion since the American Civil War.
