Explosion of the Ammunition Ship USS Mount Hood - November 10, 1944: On this day in history, November 10, 1944, critical events took place today in Papua New Guinea, South Pacific Ocean, regarding the Explosion of the Ammunition Ship USS Mount Hood. On the morning of November 10, 1944, ammunition ship USS Mount Hood exploded in Seeadler Harbour, Manus Island. The cause of the explosion remains unknown, however it killed all the crew, who were onboard, as well as those on ships nearby, approximately 400 people in total. 371 other sailors were injured and 22 other craft were either damaged beyond repair or destroyed.
