Lattimer Massacre - September 10, 1897: On this day in history, September 10, 1897, critical events took place today in Lattimer, Pennsylvania, USA, regarding the Lattimer Massacre. When around 400 unarmed German and Slav striking miners arrived at the coal mine in Lattimer, owned by Calvin Pardee, they were confronted by Sheriff James F. Martin and his posse of around 150 armed deputies. Martin ordered the strikers to disperse before grabbing an American flag from the lead striker. There was a tussle and the police opened fire killing 19 miners and wounding several more. The victims had all been shot in the back. Empress Elisabeth of Austria and her lady in waiting were walking along the promenade, by the shore of lake Geneva, heading for the steamship 'Geneve' to sail to Montreux. Luigi Lucheni, an Italian anarchist, approached the pair and stabbed the Empress while feigning a stumble. She died from her wound later that afternoon.
