Theft of the Hope Diamond with the French Crown Jewels - September 11, 1792: On this day in history, September 11, 1792, important events took place today in Paris, France, surrounding the Theft of the Hope Diamond with the French Crown Jewels. During the French Revolution, while Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were being held in the Temple, thieves broke into Hôtel du Garde-Meuble de la Couronne and stole the majority of the crown jewels. Amongst the jewels was the 'French Blue' diamond. The diamond never resurfaced in it's original form, however the 'Hope' diamond was later confirmed as being a part of it. Chritiana Resistance - September 11, 1851: On this day in history, September 11, 1851, momentous events took place today in Christiana, Pennsylvania, USA, with regard to the Chritiana Resistance. 4 Slaves, belonging to Edward Gorsuch, fled to Christiana Pennsylvania from Maryland and Gorsuch went after them with warrants and Federal Marshals. The slaves had sought refuge at the farm of William Parker, an abolishionist. It's unclear how the trouble started but Gorsuch was killed and other members of his party were wounded. Ninth Avenue Derailment - September 11, 1905: On this day in history, September 11, 1905, momentous events took place today in New York City, USA, with regard to the Ninth Avenue Derailment. A Ninth Avenue train on the New York City elevated line was mistakenly switched to a line with a sharp curve. The Motorman, Paul Kelly, tried to slow the train from 30 mph to the 9 mph required for the curve but was unable to slow it sufficiently. The resulting derailment caused 13 deaths and 48 injuries.
