Sinking of the SS Central America - September 12, 1857: On this day in history, September 12, 1857, momentous events took place today in Carolinas, USA, with regard to the Sinking of the SS Central America. Commanded by William Lewis Herndon, the sidewheel steamer SS Central America sailed from Colon, Panama on September 3, 1857. The ship was heading for New York City and was heavily laden with gold from the California Gold Rush. She was battered for a couple of days by a hurricane that struck her on September 9 and left her badly damaged. She eventually sunk on September 12, and despite help from 2 other ships, 425 people were killed. Explosion at the Hercules Powder Company - September 12, 1940: On this day in history, September 12, 1940, important events took place today in Kenvil, New Jersey, USA, in respect of the Explosion at the Hercules Powder Company. The Hercules Powder Company plant at Kenvil was opened in 1871 for the production of dynamite for mining. Sinking of RMS Laconia - September 12, 1942: On this day in history, September 12, 1942, important events took place today in West African Coast, in respect of the Sinking of RMS Laconia. Owned by Cunard and Launched on April 9, 1921, RMS Laconia was an Ocean Liner. She was converted to become a troop carrier, during the second world war, and carried troops to the Middle East. On September 12, 1942, under the command of Captain Rudolph Sharp, she was carrying Italian prisoners of war when she was torpedoed by a German U-Boat, U-156. Wells Fargo Depot Heist - September 12, 1983: On this day in history, September 12, 1983, momentous events took place today in West Hartford, Connecticut, USA, with regard to the Wells Fargo Depot Heist. Jim McKeon was recruited as Manager of the West Hartford branch of Wells Fargo after being a guard for only 5 months. The inexperienced McKeon employed Victor Gerena as his deputy. After binding McKeon and another colleague at gunpoint, Gerena went on to rob the depot. He escaped with in excess of $7 million which he passed over to Los Macheteros, a group seeking independence for Puerto Rico.
