Destruction of the French Battleship Liberte - September 25, 1911: On this day in history, September 25, 1911, important events took place today in Toulon, France, in respect of the Destruction of the French Battleship Liberte. The French Battleship 'Liberte', commanded by Captain Luois Jaures, was moored in Toulon when the forward and main ammunition magazines exploded. Assassination of Solomon Bandaranaike - September 25, 1959: On this day in history, September 25, 1959, important events took place today in Colombo, Ceylon (Now Sri Lanka), surrounding the Assassination of Solomon Bandaranaike. Solomon Bandaranaike, the prime minister of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), was at his home in Colombo when he was visited by Talduwe Somarama, a Buddhist Monk. When Bandaranaike greeted him, Somarama pulled a gun from his robes and shot him. Bandaranaike died from his wounds the following day. On September 25, 1983, a group of 38 Irish Republican Army prisoners escaped from the maximum security prison HM Prison Maze.
